Canning Town South

People power in action!
Cllr Craig and his team were quick to discover that Sir Robin Wales, the mayor of Newham, had silent plans to build a nine-storey block of flats on an existing Canning Town public site.

The Pitts Head pub was to be knocked down and replaced with an ugly tower block of impractical 1 and 2 bedroom flats.  The mayor hadn’t told anybody about this, not even the landlord of the pub!  It was classic New Labour Newham.

Cllr Craig called an emergency meeting for local people.  A letter and petition was drawn up with the help of the CPA team and 24 hours later the mayor had backed down!  It was a real victory for the local people.

Fire Hydrants
As summer approached in 2004 the residents of Bray Drive , Canning Town , knew that they faced months of disruption and annoyance.  Local kids were setting off the fire hydrants on their road.

Water supply was severely restricted and so local residents came to Alan for help.  Alan organised meetings with Thames Water and the local fire service.

As a result of those meetings Thames Water decided to use Canning Town south as a testing ground for their new design of fire hydrant, specifically designed to prevent tampering.

Standing up for life!
In April 2004 the Christian Peoples Alliance in Newham joined together with local Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, of Killip Close, Canning Town , to organise a silent demonstration against abortion.  It was to mark the Abortion Act passed by parliament in 1967.

People of all faiths and none joined our public stand on a busy Saturday lunchtime on the Barking Road , Canning Town , one of main routes into Newham.  It was an encouraging day.

We plan to hold another silent protest in November 2005 so watch this website for details!
