Council call to reject revised Queens Market plans

For Immediate Release: 24 November 2006

CPA motion "to keep pressure on Mayor and St Modwen"

Campaigners are expected to fill the spectators' gallery at the Council meeting on 4 December when the redevelopment of Queens Market comes up for debate once again.

The Christian Peoples Alliance group is proposing a motion that Newham Council should reject the recently-published revised St Modwen plans which now include demolishing the 'Queens' pub as well as the existing market hall. It is expected that the motion, that will be proposed by CPA group leader Cllr Alan Craig, will also be supported by the three Respect party councillors.

"We are all working with Friends of Queens Market and Queens Market Traders Association to stop these plans which will now destroy both the market and the popular pub," said Cllr Craig. "We want renovation not redevelopment. Together we intend to keep the pressure on the Mayor and St Modwen. We've seen off Asda. Now we want to see off St Modwen."

The Christian Peoples Alliance will be actively supporting the Friends of Queens Market demonstration and petition-collection at the Queens pub this Saturday, 25 November at 12.00 noon.

1. Motion

The full motion to be proposed by Alan Craig is as follows:

Revised plans for Queens Market
Council, having examined St Modwen’s revised plans for Queens Market, considers that they will destroy this unique multi-cultural facility that is especially popular amongst Newham residents on low incomes. Council considers the revised plans should be rejected and commends Friends of Queens Market and Queens Market Traders Association for their reinvigorated campaign to save the market and the well used ‘Queens’ pub which under the revised plans is also under threat, and to bring about renovation rather than redevelopment of the site.
