Christian Councillor Calls for Mayor to Say NO to A Casino for Newham
For Immediate Release: 8 Febuary 2007
Councillor Denise Stafford, Christian Peoples Alliance Councillor for Canning Town South in the London Borough of Newham, has tabled a Motion for discussion at the Full Council Meeting on Monday February 19th which regrets the decision by the Casino Advisory Panel to award Newham Council a licence to operate a casino of up to 1,500 metres in size.
Councillor Stafford will call on the Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, to take the following steps before he reaches his final decision on the Casino:
1. Consult with faith and community groups in the Newham area and pay particular attention to the submission already made by leaders of the Transform Newham group of churches.
2. Obtain and study a copy of the report prepared by Price Waterhouse on behalf of the London Borough of Greenwich which outlined many potential problems associated with the proposed Casino at The Dome.
3. Consult with the local providers of Mental Health Care to ensure that they have the resources to cope with the rise in Mental Health issues that will follow the opening of a casino.
